Not only are there practically a million people a year who have to file bankruptcy, not only do you probably (statistically) know many who have – though they may not have just come out and told you (even if you know them very well), and not only is it as common as divorce these days…
But there are many examples through history, including some very famous and successful people who have had burdensome debts, and filed bankruptcy. As you’ll see from the list, many have come back from it and become tremendously successful.
There are historical documents going very far back in time, but there are also biblical references to the occurrence of debt, through no fault of one’s own: In the old testament, it mentions the “Year of Jubilee” or “forgiveness of debt” every 7 years. In the new testament, it mentions forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.
Below, I’ll just mention a few people, but this is just scratching the surface, see how many names you recognize:
Abraham Lincoln (as a billboard I saw once said: “tried, tried, and then…”),
Harry Truman, Samuel Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and Ulysses S. Grant.
From other “categories”: Larry King, John Wayne, Toni Braxton, Mick Fleetwood, Merle Haggard, M.C. Hammer, Cindi Lauper, and Tom Petty.
And others: Frank Lloyd Wright, Kim Basinger, Doris Day, Burt Reynolds, Lawrence Taylor, Johnny Unitas, P.T. Barnum, Francis Ford Coppola, Walt Disney, Henry Ford, and Charles Schwab.
These are just a few of the names I recognize, but, you get the idea.
